Brittney Griner is fresh off of a 50 point game, and the buzz is strong for Ms.Griner. Women in the world of sports have evolved in several genres of sports. By Danica Patrick being a trendsetter with being the first woman in NASCAR, it has allowed women in various sports to try their hand at competing with the fellas.
Women’s College Basketball has not seen such a dominate force since the likes of Cheryl Miller and Lisa Leslie. While at Baylor Griner has been nominated to the All-American Team three times as well as winning the 2012 AP National Player of the Year. This season Griner is looking to repeat those accolades as well as becoming a back to back winner of the Division I Women’s Basketball Championship. Many feel that the Griner’s talents will transfer too easily at the WNBA level. That brings the question about Griner entering the NBA Draft. I know it may sound absurd, but could Griner really play in the NBA? Me personally I don’t think that Griner can make the jump, but I feel that it does not hurt to try.
Standing at 6’8 and 208lbs Griner would be the size of a shooting guard/small forward in the NBA, meaning she would have to deal with Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony, and Lebron James. It sounds like a good argument, but in reality Griner isn’t ready for the NBA. There is nothing wrong with being an icon in the WNBA and in Women’s Overseas Basketball.
Whether or not Griner is NBA material, we know that her impact on Women’s Hoops will live on forever as being one of the most dominant players of any generation.
