Welcome back to the 2nd Annual Brian “The Custodian” Cardinal Award. Mr. Cardinal wasn’t fortunate enough to make it back to the finals to compete for his prestigious award. With that said those that don’t know the meaning of this award here’s a little rundown, it’s an award for the grunts of the team aka the hard worker, the person who does all of the dirty work.
When the Miami Heat won the title Thursday there was only one person I thought fittingly deserved to wear the crown as “The Custodian” of 2012. If you watched the Finals at all you know who it is before I reveal his name. This man earned this award during the Indiana Pacer series with his hard fouls in the paint, he even got suspended for a game. Yes you guessed it right, Udonis Haslem you are the winner of the 2nd Annual Brian “The Custodian” Cardinal Award.
Haslem’s numbers were not great in the Finals by any means but this isn’t what this award is about. Haslem’s hard nosed rugged style (even a rugged haircut well at least beard) was needed to protect the paint, foul, screen and rebound. He played all 5 games in the series, his minutes decreased as the Heat decided to go small with Battier in the lineup and Bosh was healthy. He averaged 16 mpg, 2.6 ppg, 4.4 rpg and 2 fpg. Every successful team needs a guy like this that will do whatever is asked of him to help the team.
Congrats to the player they call UD. If the Heat repeat next year he will have a strong shot to repeat for this award. Enjoy being a champion and your award.
