John Henson might turn out to be the best NBA player out of UNC from this years draft. Better than Harrison Barnes, Kendall Marshall, and Tyler Zeller. Don’t get me wrong. I believe they all have a chance to be real good or even great players in the League.
Barnes ability to shoot was impressive but his inability to create showed up a lot during the summer league. Marshall was impressive as a passer but has to get more aggressive on offense. Zeller seemed to always be in the right spot but I would like to see him get on the block and demand the ball. They all had some very good moments this summer but I was most impressed with Henson.
As a freshman at North Carolina, Henson came in highly recruited but found his self playing a lot out of position as he was to light to play inside. In his 2nd season he established his self as a dominate defensive presence but his offense was still behind. In his third and final year at Chapel Hill he displayed some offensive progress but still was far from Tim Duncan.
In my eyes Henson entered the league with the most upside but the least NBA ready out of all his fellow Tar Heels but he has proved me wrong after his strong showing in the Vegas Summer League. His foot work was Kevin McHale like with an array of up and unders. The jump hook was pure with both the left and right. He even show NBA range from the three-point line. His rebounding and defenses was on par with college and he looks to be a pretty good passer as well. John Henson is a lot better than I thought he was and just might be the starting center in Milwaukee this season as well as the top Tar Heel.
