The Dodgers franchise was under a lot of turmoil starting the season. People didn’t know how the bills were going to get paid, maybe I’m exaggerating but then Magic Johnson’s group stepped in and purchased the Dodgers for a record 2 billion dollar amount. March 28th things changed for this storied franchise.
After Johnson’s group purchased the team from Frank McCourt, people were relieved but had no ideal what the Magic man had in stored for Dodger fans. The Dodgers have been called the Yankees of the west coast back in their heyday but before this year that couldn’t have further from the truth.
After the purchase the group hasn’t kept their check books locked up to the delight of the Dodger fans. They gave outfielder Andre Ethier a 5 year 85 million dollar extension. They signed Cuban outfielder Yasiel Puig to a 7 year 42 million dollar deal. If you thought they were done, no sir not them, they traded for star 3B/SS Hanley Ramirez who is in the 4th year of his 6 year 70 million dollar deal he signed with the Marlins. Ramirez is still owed around 6 million this year and a total of 31.5 million through the entirety of the contract. The point is they are spending money, I don’t think the check book has closed yet?
The Dodgers are currently tied for 1st in NL West and with the Hanley trade there is a high possibly they will be a factor in this race until the season is over. With those check books open they are trying to relive the Yankees of the west coast theme. Fans of the Dodgers should be excited because to the Magic Man “money ain’t a thing” to quote Jermaine Dupri and that’s a good problem for a franchise to have. Keep spending that dough to keep the Dodgers competitive its good for baseball.
