At the beginning of free agency everybody including the Seahawks figured they knew who their QB would be for the 2012 season. They signed former Packers backup QB Matt “6 TD in one game” Flynn to a 3 year 26 million dollar contract (10 million guaranteed), seemed like a lot of cash for a guy who only played one good game but hey who I’m to judge? With that signing in March it seemed like the writing was on the wall on who would be behind center in September.
The term “No position is safe” held true in Seattle as 3rd round pick Russell Wilson took the northwest by storm. Wilson only slipped to the 3rd round because of his size, which is 5’11”. He is a mobile QB who led Wisconsin to the Rose Bowl last year and before that put up awesome numbers with NC State.
Last year the Seahawks had a shaky line so having a mobile QB who can make plays back there can be nothing but positive right?(T. Jackson wasn’t the answer) Wilson is a rookie so we know there will be growing pains but for him to unseat a man who was just signed to a 3 year deal and guaranteed 10 million dollars is impressive. 3rd round picks normally make the roster but they are not promised a fortune ya know?
I know he hasn’t even made it through his 1st season but he may be just what the Seahawks need for the next decade or so. If he continues to take flight in Seattle it will prove two things: That Wilson was a steal in the 3rd round and they fronted Matt Flynn too much money but either way they may have just stumbled upon their QB of the future.
After watching Wilson play this Sunday enough though they lost, he can blame two receiver drops in the final drive for that but it looks like Wilson may not be giving up that starting position anytime soon.
