Being an athletic QB creates a lot of criticism nowadays. I don’t totally understand the hate for somebody who can extend the play or turn nothing into something. I used athletic because QB’s of all races have this trait, most of the time it’s just the black QB that gets thrown in this lazy box.
You see a lot of coverage stating teams can’t survive long term with a mobile QB, but people act like the pocket is the safest place on the field. Being able to make plays from the pocket is important to be successful in the NFL but we shouldn’t lessen the effect of a QB who can make plays with his feet as well as his arm. Just because people have different playing styles doesn’t mean their both not great or good whichever you want to pick.
When you do research QB’s do have a higher risk of getting hurt when they scramble but pocket QB’s get hurt just like the next man just research Brady, Manning, Palmer, Stafford just to name a few. Brady getting his knee tore up in the pocket forever changed the rules for tackling a QB. Palmer hasn’t been right ever since he got his knee tore up in the pocket from a low hit, Bengals fans will never forget that day.
Vick is the posterboy of getting hurt for the athletic QB we know that and RGIII is hurt now but every time you step on the field you can be hurt. RGIII makes plays from the pocket just as good as the next man and maybe his set running plays should be monitored but his dual threat ability is what keeps opposing awake at night. Cutler and Rodgers both make plays with their feet but a lot of people turn the blind eye to that. Steve Young and Randall Cunningham were the posterboys for the athletic QB when I was a young buck. Young even won a ship as a starting QB and one of the greatest QB to ever play and the last game I remembering him play he got hurt in the pocket on a CB blitz. The pocket isn’t a safe haven, I think people live in this fantasy world that if you have a pocket passer he will play for X amount of years when really it’s a cramp shoot for either type of QB.
People need to embrace the more athletic QB. It’s been proven they can win just as much as a pure pocket QB. I think as long as they can make plays from the pocket also then they will be successful and coaches have to protect their QB by teaching them to protect their bodies on scrambles and not call a million set QB run plays.
Like it or not the game is changing folks and if the new style QB keeps progressing like they have the last few years, their might be more RGIII’s in the league than Tom Brady’s.
Yeah, It’s crazy man. Nobody says anything when pocket passers get hurt while in the pocket. I hope Kaepernick breaks the trend so that they can stop saying that running quarterbacks can’t win the big game.
