I have a lot of love for the Memphis Grizzlies. They are a small market team, and they play a tough brand of basketball. The Grizz built their team in the old-fashioned way does not model the other finesse teams in the NBA. Many fake sports analysts like myself, and people around the basketball world had many questions and comments about the Rudy Gay trade.
To some this was a very bad trade for the Grizz and will make them regress as a team. Rudy Gay is an explosive wing player with the ability to shoot the three ball as well as having the own ability to create his own shot. Gay is a so-so defender, and can become shot happy during certain stretches of game. Rudy Gay is 26 and is just now entering his prime as a basketball player, but there is one problem with him. Rudy Gay is scheduled to make close to $38 million dollars over the next two season. That price doesn’t sound as bad until you look at the contracts of players such as Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Paul who make less money than Gay.
Being the third best player on a team that price is pretty steep. The Grizzlies are at fault for paying Gay that huge contract, but they were geniuses for getting out of that contract. The Grizzlies will miss Rudy Gay’s ability to score, but the Grizz will become better on the defense end and they have some financial breathing room without having to pay Gay for the next two seasons, and a bigger contract on the next contract offer.
People tend to have selective amnesia when talking about certain topics. The Grizzlies made it to the Western Conference Divisional Round of the playoffs in the 2011 playoffs (without Rudy Gay), and was bounced out of the first round last season against “Lob City”. The Grizzlies is a team that had issues with scoring at a high clip with Rudy Gay, so it makes sense to get a few quality players at a cheaper price. Tayshaun Prince has been in Sibera with the Detroit Pistons and can help the Grizz with three-point shooting and defense. The Grizzlies also acquired quality bench players in Austin Daye and Ed Davis. Yeah, the Grizzlies will not be as fun to play with on NBA 2K13, but at the end of the day they made out good on the trade. The benefits of the trade may not be noticed right away, but in due time people will start to say the Grizzlies got the better end of the trade.
If Prince was a couple of years younger, it would have been a great trade!
I think they should’ve waited until the summer to make the move but on the money it was Hella smart and they got a some low cost players back. Prince on defense will be legit along side Allen. Conley will have to score more along with Bayless
they caught a break in that san antonio series…
