Nnamdi Asomugha made headlines by signing with the San Francisco 49ers. The past two seasons Asomugha played for the Philadelphia Eagles falling short of all expectations that were expected of he and the Eagles. Prior to arriving in Philly Asomugha was an All-Pro CB with the Oakland Raiders.
Asomugha was cut due to his play on the field and with is hefty salary being a burden on the rest of the team. Asomugha can still play at a high level when put in the best position to succeed. This is a player who is only 31 years of age, so there is still a lot of tread on his tires. Nnamdi was at his best as a weak side CB in Oakland covering his half of the field only allowing minimal catches. In Philly it seemed like Andy Reid & Co attempted to turn Nnamdi into a Charles Woodson type of player, which he did not produce as expected.
Nnamdi did show flashes of his greatness while in the city of Brotherly Love, but for the most part he was an asset to the opposing teams by giving up several big plays and touchdowns. Nnamdi Asomugha should be single-handedly responsible for the birth of Victor Cruz becoming an elite receiver.
Asomugha is a player that has never experienced winning on the NFL level. In 9 years in the NFL Asomugha has failed to make the playoffs in all of his seasons. Like many people say, winning cures all. By being in a championship environment with Jim Harbaugh and the Niners I feel that Nnamdi will look like the player that was in Oakland or at least close to it.
Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio’s defense produces a lot of pressure on the quarterback which makes it an easier job for defensive backs to make plays. With the back-end getting exposed in the Super Bowl the addition of Nnamdi could help put a band-aid on one of the 49ers few weaknesses. Getting Asomugha is a low risk high reward for the 49ers, and could be a key component to another Super Bowl run! Kudos to my Niners! Good Move!
I love the move a one year deal non guaranteed also.. but I think he will be a starter and may blow up like Rogers did a few years ago
