The Detroit Lions franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford is doing the “Money Dance” right about now.
Stafford, 25, was recently awarded a contract for extension that totaled out to $53 million dollars. The contract is over three years, including $41 million dollars of guaranteed money. Stafford, who has two years left on his rookie deal will also receive that money as well. Stafford has thrown for over 10,000 yards during the past two seasons. Stafford had injury issues during his first few seasons, but since then he has been pretty healthy.
The Lions are on pace to pay Stafford a whopping $127 Million dollars in a nine year span. I don’t know if the Lions are trying to win Super Bowls or Fantasy Football leagues, but that is a lot of money for a quarterback that has only one playoff appearance.
Stafford does have time to show his worth. Being only 25 years old, and having a plethora of weapons on the offensive side of the ball this contract may pay off.
I am not mad for Stafford for getting his money, but all it is doing is driving up the market price for younger quarterbacks such as Colin Kaepernick, Russell Wilson, Andrew Luck, and Robert Griffith III.
The jury is still out on Stafford and his lucrative contract. When big contracts come big expectations are next in line.
Only time will tell…..
