The NBA summer leagues are a great platform to see the progress of young players that are in the NBA, as well as rookies that are getting acclimated to life in the NBA. The NBA Summer League format is more like AAU compared to the actual game of the NBA.
In this years summer league rookies such as Cody Zeller, C.J. McCollum, Kelly Olynyk, and Victor Oladipo have been better than advertised .
Guys such as Trey Burke, Otto Porter, and Ben Mclemore have not done so well during the summer league. Even second year players such as Jeremy Lamb, Dion Waiters, and Jeffery Taylor have had their moments as well.
It is always good to see the young players get a chance to flourish, but at times we as fans can get too excited. I am guilty of this, and I am pretty sure that I am not the only one.
Fans have the right to be upset or excited, but I just want them to pump their brakes for the time being. Calling Kelly Olynyk the next Dirk Nowitzki is asinine, and giving up on Trey Burke makes absolutely no sense.
Summer basketball is important, but I believe it is what you learn during this process rather than focusing on the numbers. I can bet you Trey Burke, Ben Mclemore, and Otto Porter will have better outcomes during the season.
All I will say is that, I remember in the summer 2007 Marcus Banks (Phoenix Suns at the time) set a summer league record of 42 points.
No disrespect to Banks, but what NBA team does he play for now?
My point exactly.
