The Appreciation of Anquan Boldin

Being a San Francisco 49ers fan I can say that I pretty happy at the moment. Yes it is only Week 1 of the NFL season, but the excitement is in the air after seeing Boldin’s debut against the Green Bay Packers. Boldin finished the game with 13 receptions, 208 yards, and 1 touchdown. The 49ers acquired Boldin from the Baltimore Ravens after Boldin dominated the 49ers in the Super Bowl.

It seems like wherever Boldin plays it seems as if he is undervalued. Balling out is nothing knew to Boldin. Since coming into the league in 2003 Boldin has been an upper echelon wide receiver. Boldin played in the shadows of Larry Fitzgerald while in Arizona, but was equally effective. While being a member of the Cardinals, Boldin accumulated 586 receptions and 7,520 receiving yards in seven seasons.

During Boldin’s tenure with Arizona he didn’t play with a consistent quarterback until Kurt Warner became the full-time starter in 2008. Boldin helped turn around the culture in Arizona helping them go to a laughing-stock into a formidable team. After he helped led Cards to the Super Bowl in 2008, Boldin only played one more season in the desert.

Boldin and then Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt clashed, and Boldin was shipped to the Baltimore Ravens. Boldin’s stats in Baltimore were never eye-popping, but his impact on the field was irreplaceable. The Ravens were always a few quality players too short on the offensive side of the ball. with Boldin being apart of the Ravens roster the offenses finally had a enough talent to put up points to give the Ravens defense a much needed break.

Boldin’s physical play was something that the Ravens lacked on the offensive side of the ball. Whether it was his ability to run after the catch or to do whatever his team needed Boldin did it.

For example, the turning point of the Ravens seasons happened because of Boldin. In a game against the San Diego Chargers on a 4th and 29 play, Boldin made a crucial play that allowed Ray Rice to gain the first down.

After that game the Ravens gained momentum that eventually led them to a Super Bowl run. The push to win Ray Lewis a Super Bowl was evident, but Baltimore would not have been in position to get to the Super Bowl without Boldin.

It seems that if Boldin does his job and plays to the best of his abilities teams tend to let him go. We live in the highlight era of sports, and teams are looking for a player that can take an eighty yard score to the house at any given moment. Boldin is not that player, and will ever be, but he is a player that dominate when he gets the ball in his hands.

Colin Kaepernick and Jim Harbaugh have a new weapon that they have in the arsenal. Whether Boldin stays with the 49ers after this season is unknown at this moment. I just hope that he finally gets the appreciation that he deserves.

  1. Boldin is a dog, they said he was too slow coming out of Florida State (dominated while in college) so he slipped what he do? Set the rookie record in receptions. He got Flacco that 120 million dollar contract. I hope Flacco pays him monthly. The crazy thing is we got him for a 6th rd pick thank you Ravens for not wanting to pay this man 6 million dollars this season. Imagine when Mario and Tree comeback… Man listen, Patton and Baldwin in the cut.. I’m getting hype just thinking about this team, thanks Boldin for cookin in the Bay Area
