When people bring up Floyd Mayweather’s name you hear people say that he is charismatic, a great boxer, and cocky. It seems like Mayweather can be called anything, but smart. Whether it is in the ring or outside of the ring Mayweather does not get the credit that he deserves for being an intelligent human being.
When talking about boxing the fighters are typically marketed by someone else. In the past you had Don King being the mouth for Mike Tyson, and several other boxers. That is not the case when it comes to Floyd Mayweather. Yes, Mayweather can be cocky, arrogant, and all of the above, but he is a smarter than what he gets credit for.
In the sport of boxing guys such as Oscar De La Hoya, Don King, and Bob Arum have been looked at as great for the sport of boxing when it comes to promotions, and brand building. Since Floyd has started Mayweather promotions he has increased his worth in the ring and outside of it.
Many people may not realize it, but Floyd Mayweather was the highest paid athlete in the year 2012.
During that year Mayweather earned a whopping $85 million dollars, and will likely reach that number this year if he fights again. Mayweather reached that dollar amount without any major endorsement deals.
Mayweather has his promotion company, and he receives revenue from ticket sales, and pay per view earnings. Outside of being a great fighter he is just as business savvy outside of the ring. Floyd Mayweather does not have commercials or brands backing him, but he has his name and his legacy to live off of.
It seems that every time a Mayweather fight comes around the opponent is normally put on a pedestal higher than what they should be. Nobody wants to see perfection, so who wouldn’t want to pay to see Floyd lose. Mayweather understands this game, and takes advantage of it at all cost.
Being the polarizing figure that Mayweather is, he understands that people will pay any dollar amount to see him lose. The more wins that piles up for Mayweather equals more money in the bank. His past fight with Canelo Alvarez awarded him $41.5 Million dollars, and his next fight will likely earn him more money. As long is that zero is in the right column Mayweather will continue to pile up cash.
In 2006 Mayweather fought Zab Judah, and there were 374,000 Pay Per View buys. Six years later in a bout against Miguel Cotto there a 1,500,000 Pay Per View buys.
The numbers shows how the anticipation for Floyd losing a fight will always increase over time. Going into the Zab Judah fight Mayweather was 35-0, and going in the Cotto fight he was 42-0. Those numbers alone show you that if you hate or love Floyd Mayweather you want to see him win or lose.
I hate to see when people don’t get the credit that they deserve. Floyd Mayweather will always get his respect as a boxer, but will ever be looked at as one of the best business men in boxing history?
Men lie, women lie, but number don’t. If $350 Million dollars (and counting) isn’t enough to garner any respect what will it take for Mayweather to be held in the same light as his peers.
He does do some “coon” stuff but at the end of the GOAT when it comes to marketing, nobody has done it like him, he is a mastermind
