In the 2009 NFL Draft the Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted Kansas State QB Josh Freeman with the 17th pick. After having a solid not spectacular 3 year career in Manhattan, pro scouts were very high on Freeman because of his size, arm strength and athletic ability. With all of those attributes mid to late 1st round Freeman was a good gamble. Who wouldn’t want a 6’6” QB with a nice arm and can move a little bit in the pocket?
After a rough rookie season where he was a human pick machine during the 10 games he showed enough promise for the Bucs to believe they had a shot at a franchise QB. During his 2nd season he balled out, Josh led the Bucs to a 10-6 record with the flare to bring them back when down in the 4th quarter. The Bucs didn’t make the playoffs but after his performance that season everything looked to be on the up and up in Tampa. Freeman had 25 TD’s with only 6 Int’s during that year he could only get better right?
Year 3 didn’t go well for Freeman as he turned into the human pick machine again tossing 22 of them and only have 16 touchdowns. The Bucs were getting smashed on the field and the QB with so much promise wasn’t doing anything to turn the clouds to sun.
After a down year he had a solid year 4 with the Bucs but they again missed the playoffs he only threw 17 picks but had a career high 27 touchdowns thrown. The rollercoaster ride seems to be evening out and then started this year his fifth and contract year right now he is completing fewer than 50% of his throws. I know he has only played three games this year but it has been starting off bad, his coach has been rumored to have taken his captaincy from him even though his teammates voted him captain. And the Bucs are 0-3 and they lost to the Jets yes the Jets (Geno got them looking respectable).
He has had a trend of a good/decent year and then a terrible one if he follows the trend this year and finishes the season on a bad note Freeman won’t be playing for the Bucs next year. A man with Freeman’s talent is on the road to being a mediocre player. Let’s see how this story unfolds.
