Former Cowboys/Bears receiver Sam “Pablo” Hurd was sentenced to 15 years in prison for his involvement in a drug ring. When the case was brought to light Hurd was playing for the Chicago Bears. Hurd was never a star in the NFL but he was a solid and seemed to always stick on rosters no matter the talent in the corp. He was also under a 3 year 5 million dollar contract which is nothing to sneeze at.
The word on the street is that “Pablo” Hurd was trying to move 5 to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1000 pounds of marijuana a week. Yes, a week he said, “To be moving 4 kilograms a week already”.
First off we know he wasn’t a franchise receiver but why would you throw your life away when you are making good money? I know when you make a certain amount of money you want more but wouldn’t think you play on TV every Sunday you are an easy target to get caught? Did he think he was Nate Newton? Do your research if you don’t know the Newton story, let Google be your friend. Did he want a better car or home than Brandon Marshall and Jay Cutler?
Did he listen to “Rich off Cocaine” too many times on repeat and said f*** it? That song will make any man think about quitting his day job, think they can sing and turn into a kingpin. The key word in that sentence was “think” not do, which Hurd obviously did.
Not only did Hurd let himself and teammates down, he also has a wife and kids. What I wouldn’t do on the legal side of the law to have a million in my bank account.
Hurd had a clean record before this case; he threw away clean money and his life in the pursuit to becoming a drug lord. I don’t know if we can blame CTE for this situation. 6 years in the league and hard work his entire life thrown down the toilet for the quick cash.
