Redefining The Position

I have noticed this season in particular a jump in the way NBA franchises have been led. Aside from the injury bug plaguing the entire league a jump in the point guard positions scoring is apparent to me. There have always been “small” men with big scoring outburst in the league such as Tiny Archibald, Isaiah Thomas and Allen Iverson. It seems this year though, nearly every team has a Point guard as the first option.

Even Chris Paul the consensus best pass first point guard in the league is the number one option in the fourth quarter for his team to score. Kyrie Irving, Damian Lillard, Stephen Curry, John Wall, Isaiah Thomas, Mike Conley, Ty Lawson, Goran Dragic, Kemba Walker, Jeff Teague, Brandon Jennings appear to be a hybrid or new breed. Add Derrick Rose and Russell Westbrook the poster boys for the score first lead by buckets example list also. With the shift of inside out ball coming full circle in the late nineties, the game appears to be ever evolving once more.

We always see copycat versions try to counter opponents like the big three (Kg, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen) (Lebron, D Wade, C Bosh). Now that we have teams with explosive shoot first point guards, what types of counters will we see? Maybe teams with big defensive backcourts sacrificing buckets for defense? To quote the late great notorious B.I.G. things done changed.
