After the dust cleared that Black Monday created, Lovie Smith’s name kept popping up as a leading candidate for multiple head coaching positions (Buccaneers, Lions and Redskins). I personally was happy because I thought he got a raw deal with the Bears, but that is for another blog post another day.
Tampa Bay signed Lovie Smith to a 4 year contract only a day after firing Greg Schiano. Greg Schiano and Mark Dominik (General Manager) both were fired on Black Monday. Lovie was hired before a GM was hired, which shows how much conviction the Glazers had in the selection.
Lovie is a low key coach on the sideline who is great on the defensive side of the ball. Look at the Bears defensive stats in 2012 and compare 2013 stats it’s like night and dad. The cupboard isn’t bare in Tampa either on both sides of the ball.
With Lovie in place the questions now for the Buccaneers are: Will they keep Revis? Will they move forward with Glennon? Who will be their GM?
People might not do a back flip when they here Lovie’s name, but he is the guy that led a Rex Grossman team to the Super Bowl, yes, Rex Grossman. That alone is worth giving the man another shot at leading a team. He’s a solid coach and will get Tampa going in the right direction. People who had to endure Schiano the last two years will be excited this year.
Good luck to you Lovie. Hopefully it all works out for you in Florida.
