Dayton, Ohio – On Sunday, February 9, 2014 The Gem City Slam traveled to Elizabeth, Indiana to battle the Southern Indiana Generals at the South Harrison Community Center. The Slam defeated the Generals 126-76 and is now in sole possession of 1st place in the UBA Eastern Conference with a 2-0 record. “We are now leading the UBA in scoring for a reason”, said Coach Travis McAvene “Our players are very athletic and have a big chip on their shoulders.” The Slam jumped ahead early 12-0 and never looked back in a game where consistent scoring was matched by defensive intensity, holding The Generals to less than 40 points a half.
“We played better as a team this week by sharing the ball more”, said McAvene. All 11 Slam players scored, with six scoring in double figures. The Slam pounced from the opening buzzer with 12 unanswered points; and as the game progressed, the depth from their bench wore down the opposition in the second half. C J Anderson had another dominant performance with 21 points and 8 rebounds, only missing one shot all game. Gino Smith was perfect from the field at 6 for 6 and 4 for 4 in free throws, adding 16 points. Kurt Duke exploded off the bench for 17 points, and a 3 point buzzer beater at the end of the half. We had great guard play throughout the entire game from Aaron Robinson, who leads the league in steals averaging four per game, and was 3 for 5 from the three point line, as well as Jarelle Redden, who was 4 for 6 from the three point line. Every member of the Slam contributed to the points displayed on the scoreboard. After only two games, the Gem City Slam is coming together to perform like the professional athletes that they are, and there it is.
