The Ravens took a step towards possibly keeping Terrell Suggs in a Ravens uniform for the rest of his career by signing him to an extension this week. Suggs, a 31-year old defensive end, signed a 4-year $28.5 million extension to keep him in Baltimore four more years.
This move gives the Ravens a lot of relief in the 2014 season his original cap hit for this season was set to be $12.4 million. With the new deal Sizzle will only count towards $7.8 million. Suggs received an $11 million signing bonus and will get a total of $16 million guaranteed.
It is good to see the Ravens taking care of one its defensive staples over the last decade. Last off season the Ravens let safeties Ed Reed and Bernard Pollard go, and also traded receiver Anquan Boldin. We all know Ray Lewis retired, but who knew if the Ravens wanted to keep Suggs around even though he’s 31. That number can be misleading because he’s an 11 year veteran who is heading into his 12th year, all with the Ravens.
After the 2014 season Suggs will have $5 million left due on his guaranteed cash. Barring a steep decline Suggs will be in Baltimore for at least two more seasons and hopefully he will be able to play out this contract, because Suggs definitely wants to be a Raven for life, just like his mentor Ray Lewis.
Suggs is the Ravens all time leader in sacks and forced fumbles with 94.5 and 29 respectively. He is coming off of a 10 sack season in 2013. That was his first full season after a torn achilles in 2012, which caused him to miss half of the season.
Good job by Ozzie Newsome and the Ravens brass for taking care of Suggs. Sometimes organizations don’t take care of their star players when they get over the age of 30. Sizzle, ball out my boy except when you playing my ‘9ers.
