At first I thought this was a stupid move for the Cavs, but after second thought this was a good move for them. It gives them proven front court help with no set ties after the season is over.
Trade Breakdown
Cleveland Cavaliers gets:
C Spencer Hawes
Philadelphia 76ers gets:
F Earl Clark
C Henry Sims
(Two) 2nd round draft picks
The Cavs got big man insurance after losing Bynum because Bynum went Bynum. Hawes isn’t great on defense, but is effective on offense. He also allows spacing on the offensive end because of his ability to hit the three. Andy is prone to get hurt and I guess they don’t have much faith in Zeller. Hawes deal is over after the season so if they don’t like the fit they don’t have to worry about resigning him. Clark and Sims have deals that roll over to the next season.
The 76ers made this move to get the draft picks. We all know they are rebuilding and covet picks more than the players on their team. Ok, except Carter-Williams and Noel, but everybody else is on the chopping block. Sims and Clark have non guaranteed contracts next year so it’s highly possible they won’t be with the 6ers next year.
This was a solid move by the Cavs, will it push them over the top in their battle for the playoffs? I don’t know, but Hawes will help.
