Matt Every claimed his first PGA tour win Sunday, shooting a 2 under 70 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. His win comes at the hands of a disappointing final round for defending Masters Champion, Adam Scott. After setting a Bay Hill record by having a seven shot lead after 36 holes, Scott shot a 4 over 76 on Sunday. With Tiger sitting this tournament out Scott had a chance to move to #1 in the world rankings, his stumble on Sunday dashes those chances.
This is not the first time we have seen Scott fail to close on a Sunday with the lead. He lost the 2012 British Open to Ernie Els after having a four shot lead with four holes to play.
Though he has won a Masters and had the pleasure to wear the coveted green jacket the fact still remains that Scott has not solidified himself as having the killer instinct touted by the greats of golf when holding a lead in the final round. Only time will tell if meltdowns like the one witnessed Sunday will be the motivating factor for Scott as his career precedes or will this be what we come to expect from him in clutch situations especially since he won’t be able to use his belly putter in 2016. Killer instinct is a gift let’s see if Scott can find his.
