Recently Steve Nash HOF point guard for the LA Lakers made comments in an interview that he had no plans of retiring because honestly he just wanted the money. Many fans were rubbed the wrong way by Nash’s comments citing he’d made millions over a long career and didn’t need the money.
Steve defended his comments by saying he has a small window to make the kind of money he can, as an athlete who uses his body for income and that anybody in his position would do the same. His teammate Kobe Bryant came to his defense also citing that billionaire owners talk money issues all the time in the NBA, but get upset when millionaire players who build there brand, talk money. It seems fans just want to hear about the game and see it played rather than hear billionaires or millionaires discuss money problems or issues.
I personally don’t feel Nash is greedy and as somebody who loves sports I want to play as long as I possibly can. While most athletes throughout the world would probably play for free if they were not professional, these men don’t. They are the top players in the world and people want to see them play and will pay to see them play.
They do make astronomical amounts of money compared to the average person worldwide but they also must dedicate a large portion of their lives to playing there sport and maintaining their top physical abilities year round. These factors make it a job no matter how fun it looks and for this they are worth every penny
