NBA: The Not so Rookie of the Year

Michael Carter-Williams of the Philadelphia 76ers was recently awarded the Rookie of the Year award. MCW’s numbers were good for a rookie as he averaged close to 17 ppg, 6.2 Rebs, and 6.3 assists per game. On paper MCW played an awesome season, but I don’t think he was the best rookie. This draft class was very weak, and there were a few bright spots. MCW was a bright spot, but I don’t think he should have been given the award.

It seemed after the first game of the season against the Miami Heat voters made up their Mind as MCW had dominated the Heat, and nearly had a quadruple double. Not taking away anything from Carter-Williams, but it appeared that a few good games gave him the award.

Other rookies such as Trey Burke, Mason Plumlee, Tim Hardaway Jr, and Victor Oladipo were very important to their teams. All of the players above teams had better records than the Sixers.

At one point of the season the Philadelphia 76ers resembled the Deering Tornadoes rather than being a team in the NBA. The 76ers reeled off 26 losses in a row, and the rookie of the year was apart of that streak. Rewarding losing proves nothing, and it shows younger players if they get stats they can still receive accolades.

When your team only wins 19 games out of 81 you have to take it with a grain of salt. Call me a hater or whatever, but Carter-Williams is the only rookie to ever win the award when the team failed to crack 20 wins.

There is nothing that can be done to take the award away from MCW, but the voters have to do a better job of casually handing out votes.
