Could Jonathan Toews be the “Captain Canada”? More people are starting to believe this.
After moving on to the Western finals with a 4-2 series win over the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night, Jonathan Toews and his Blackhawks team have made a case for a repeat cup performance, something not seen since the early 00’s. Although not a decisive victory, the W’s were all that mattered. Led by two gigantic game winners from Patrick Kane and a playoff run for the ages, Toews has made his case known that he may be Canada’s captain moving forward.
The stats don’t lie. Toews has potted more game winners in overtime for Chicago in his 6 year tenure than most do in their entire career. Having 10 gwg’s in the playoffs is nothing to shake your head at. It’s mind boggling to see how well this athlete can play when called upon in heart pounding situations. “Clutch” player doesn’t describe him enough. He has proven to all that his ability to lead is his best quality.
Not just by wearing the “C” but leading by example, Toews has own Gold in the Olympics twice, and Stanley Cup silverware twice. Compared to Sidney Crosby, the current “Captain Canada” , who has only one cup to his name, but the same number of Medals, one can argue that the titles should be reversed. Sidney has yet to prove himself when it comes to crunch time, especially in the playoffs.
The debate could go on forever with opinions differing, the numbers though, will remain the same. Until Crosby, or someone else for that matter, lead their respective teams to the final dance, Toews will be hard to dethrone. With a shot at hockey’s supremacy for the second time in consecutive seasons, the future couldn’t be brighter in Chicago.
Combine all this with a stellar team consisting of numerous stars, and you have a recipe for success. There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that this contributes immensely to Jonathan’s lengthy résumé. The solid play of each and every teammate creates more than enough chances for Chicago to dominate the NHL for many years to come and even more impressive, for Jonathan Toews to show the entire nation that he is the “Captain”
