On Sunday night, the San Antonio Spurs became the 2014 NBA champions. Kawhi Leonard was named the Finals MVP. At 22 years old, Leonard became the third youngest player to accomplish this. He isn’t a superstar, and if you aren’t an avid fan of the NBA, or college hoops, you probably didn’t know who he was until game three of the finals.
So, what’s next for the young athlete? Endorsement deals could be on the horizon for him. However, he is very soft-spoken, laid-back and reserved similar to teammate Tim Duncan. Because of his reserved demeanor, I’m not sure if he will ever become a marketing sensation.
He’s currently under contract with the Jordan Brand. The Jordan Brand is full of top heavy superstars, so there’s no guarantee he will become a top tier endorser, like Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony. Both Melo and CP3 seem to enjoy the spotlight. If you’ve ever watched Leonard with the press he’s well spoken, but doesn’t necessarily look comfortable in front of a camera. If he’s uncomfortable being in the spotlight, endorsement deals might be a challenge for the young star.
It will be interesting to see if his agent and public relations team will be able to bring in additional endorsement dollars before the start of the next season.
What are your thoughts? Can Leonard bring in the big bucks?
He is happy just playing basketball and thats all that matters. Not everything is money.. He is already a millionaire. If you are living your dream nothing else matters except to greedy and egotistical ones.
