I was able to have a phone interview with rising Jr. Middleweight contender Chris Pearson, while he is training for his next fight August 30th. Pearson’s fight will be aired on Showtime so make sure you boxing fans check that out. The Trotwood/Dayton native has a record of 14-0 and 10 KO’s. Check out what Chris had to say!
Jesse “JT” Smith = JT
Chris “Sweet” Pearson = CP
JT- When did you realize you had a special gift in the ring?
CP- I was around 10, I won my first national title, anytime you win you get more confidence. I excelled in football and basketball and they were more fun than boxing. When I got older I was able to make boxing more fun. Between 10 and 12 I realized I maybe have a special kind of talent with this.
JT- How is training different from when you first turned pro?
CP- Fighting longer fights, going from 8 to 10 rounds, now 10 to 12 rounds. So that makes training longer, I’m defiantly more seasoned now, but I’m growing everyday.
JT- How does being apart of Mayweather’s Camp (The Money Team) motivate you on a day to day basis?
CP- When you see the kind of lifestyle that Floyd lives it just makes you put your best foot forward so you can be in that same type of situation. Between the fancy things and to be able to provide for entire family. The biggest motivation is being the best, if I want to be the best ever it’s up to me so I got to put the work in now.
JT- Which boxers past and present do you compare/model you skill set to?
CP- A mixture of Roy Jones, Jr., Andre Ward and Pernell Whitaker.
JT- Your last few fights have been on Showtime, how has the extra exposure been?
CP- It comes with the process, in trying to become a world champion. When they put you on TV you have to cash in and perform well that’s why we are putting in the hard work everyday now.
JT- What goals have you set for yourself for the immediate future?
CP- Around this time next year I should be in line for a world title bout, maybe a little bit sooner. The main focus is getting myself prepared to a world champion.
JT- You have fight August 30th versus Steven Martinez, what do you know about your opponent?
CP- I remember him from the amateurs, he was a pretty solid in the amateurs, as a pro he’s 15-1 with 12 KO’s. He has a decent a record, he’s a guy that’s going to try to come in fight, it should be exciting for the fans, I’ll be ready so hopefully he’s ready.
JT- Do you plan on trying to schedule a fight in the Cincinnati or Dayton area in the near future?
CP- My pro debut was in Cincinnati at the US Bank arena on as a undercard on the Adrien Broner card. I’ve fought in Dayton a couple times, I’m taking it one fight at a time, but defiantly in the near future we are going to put on a nice event there, its something that has to happen sooner than later.
JT- During downtime what do you like to do for fun?
CP- Just hang out with my family, I have a little girl so just spending time with her and just enjoying life.
Good luck to Chris August 30th. Make sure you follow him on twitter @_ChrisPearson. #OATW
