The Kansas City Chiefs extended quarterback Alex Smith to the tune of four years $68 million dollars with $30 million guaranteed. Alex has a year remaining in his current deal for $7.5 million. I don’t know how the guarantees work out for Smith, but I’m pretty sure he will see most of his money.
The Chiefs made a trade with the 49ers to acquire Smith, they gave up two 2nd round picks in the 2013 and 2014 draft, but this move has helped stabilize their franchise. It kind of amazing because after the 2010 season only god knew who wanted Smith on their team let alone as a starting QB. Jim Harbaugh fixed what seemed to be a broken player and turned him into one of the more respectable QB’s in the game.
The Chiefs went from 2-14 in 2012 to 11-4 in games Smith started in 2013. A 9 game turnaround in a year. Smith had his best statistical season in 2013 also, throwing for 3,313 yards and 23 touchdowns. He also took care of the ball as he done the last three years and only threw 7 interceptions.
Andy Reid and the Chiefs brass has shown monetary confidence in Smith giving him an average of $17 million per year when the extension kicks in. Smith may not be the most flashy quarterback in the league and when compared to Aaron Rodgers it may be hard to give him props, but the way he’s battled through a rocky career to be a legit starter you have to salute him. In after having the stable of quarterbacks they had in 2012, Smith is a breath of fresh air for the Chiefs and their fans. For the next five years Alex Smith is the Chiefs quarterback and his contract states so.
