On Tuesday, word on the street is one of this generations greats is hanging up his cleats. Cornerback Champ Bailey is letting football go after 15 years of being one of the best in the game.
Bailey is a 12x Pro-Bowler and 3x All-Pro. He was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the 1st round (7th pick) in the 1999 draft. He spent 5 years with the Redskins and then was traded for star running back Clinton Portis to the Denver Broncos. Bailey spent 10 of his 15 years in Mile High. He went on to have his best statistical years in Denver also during the 2005-06 seasons he totaled 18 interceptions and 3 touchdowns. After those back to back seasons teams stayed away from him a lot more.
Bailey was known for not being afraid of locking horns with the opponent’s best receivers; he also was known to lower the boom when needed as he was a physical corner.
Champ was one of my favorite corners growing up and retiring lets me know I’m getting old. Bailey was signed to the Saints this offseason, but got released prior to the season starting. Obviously it’s over for Bailey being able to man the corner down, but at least he was able to try to give it another shot before he hung them up.
Much success to your future endeavors and the staff over at The Front Office News enjoyed your career.
