In my humble opinion I feel that Aaron Rodgers is on his way to be the best quarterback to ever play the game. Call me a prisoner of the moment, but I believe that Rodgers can be the best quarterback that the game has ever seen. Let’s see- Rodgers has a Super Bowl, Super Bowl MVP, regular season MVP, and I’m sure there is more to come. I know this is an argument that could ruffle a lot of feathers, but when Rodgers is done playing the game of football the argument will be there. As of now, Rodgers isn’t the best ever, but he is the best in the game today. Today’s game is a little different from years past. Quarterbacks are protected more and wide receivers are given free rein, but I feel like Rodgers would dominate an any era that he played in.
Rodgers has the best touchdown to interception ratio in NFL history, and he has 68 wins in his first 100 games starting at quarterback. In Rodger’s career he has only had one season where his quarterback rating was under 100.0, and that was his first season he was named starter in 2008. Rodgers is on his way to his second MVP trophy, and that individual success may matriculate to a Super Bowl if the Packers defense can hold up their end of the bargain. We all know that Tom Brady and Peyton Manning have been doing it at a MVP level for quite some time, but taking nothing away from them, nobody is playing the position like Rodgers. Close your eyes and imagine Brady or Manning with running ability–well you have Aaron Rodgers if you do that.
Rodgers has the ability to throw from the pocket as well as throwing on the run to either side. It also helps that Rodgers can take off and run at any given moment. Most quarterbacks can master one of the other, but Rodgers can run and pass at dominating levels. I feel that if Rodgers had to run a read-option offense similar to what Russell Wilson runs he would be the leading rusher amongst quarterbacks, and we’ve seen him dominate as a passer since he was named starter after patiently waiting after Brett Favre.
Watching Rodgers on Sunday’s and Monday’s are a thing of beauty, and as football fans I feel that we should appreciate his greatness. Outside of Andrew Luck it feels like the new-age quarterbacks are one-dimensional. Either they can run really well and not throw as great, or vice versa. The offenses are reverting to college schemes, due to the simplicity of the systems. Rodgers is sort of breath of fresh air and a last of a dying breed at the same time. Quality pocket passers are coming few far in between, and mobile quarterbacks seem to be the new wave.
In this day and age in sports we like to anoint people before they are actually great, but in Rodgers’ case he is already there, he’s just adding to his legacy. Bret Hart once said…..(see the video)
and I feel like Rodgers will be saying the same in five years.
