Yesterday, the Dallas Mavericks acquired point guard Rajon Rondo from the Boston Celtics. In my eyes this is a trade that popped up from nowhere, but we all knew Rondo would get traded before the deadline if Danny Ainge could help it. Let’s overlook the whole trade real quick.
Trade:
Dallas Mavericks get:
PG Rajon Rondo
PF Dwight Powell
Boston Celtics get:
C/PF Brandan Wright
SF Jae Crowder
PG Jameer Nelson
Conditional first round pick in the 2015 draft
Second round pick in the 2016 draft
$12.9 million trade exception
Out of the assets the Celtics have received it seems like the picks and trade exceptions were the key pieces of the deal, right? Let the experts around the globe tell it Brandan Wright, yes, Brandan Wright was the key piece of this deal. I heard on radio shows (The Dan LeBartard Show) on my way home that the Mavs shouldn’t gave up Wright. Really? No matter how you like or dislike Rondo, Brandan Wright should never be the baseline on if a trade is done. Brandan Wright has been in the league for 6 years we all know who he is and what he isn’t. We also know the Mavs won’t win or lose the NBA title because he is or isn’t on the team. I guess media just needed a way to try to bash this deal.
The Mavs are gambling acquiring Rondo on the sheer fact he will be a free agent at the years end. If they can resign him for non max dollars then this will be a steal of a deal with their current roster. Rondo isn’t a great shooter, but he can make life easier for all of the players on the floor with his passing ability and cause havoc on the defensive end with his long arms and tough play. Rondo is a clear cut upgrade over Jameer Nelson and Devin Harris at the position.
I could’ve gotten into a total stats breakdown, but no need to do so. General Manager’s please never hold up a potential blockbuster deal because you don’t want to give up Brandan Wright. Thanks and I’m out!
