If you have been following the NBA at all you know the Philadelphia 76ers have been the tank kings. I think they have mastered the art of tanking to get top picks. On the outside looking in you would think that would amount to tons of assets for the 76ers. While they have amassed assets they don’t seem to have a plan to get assets that fit with each other.
The NBA Draft has been the highlight of the 76ers season the last three years, but after drafting center Jahlil Okafor with the 3rd pick this year it was plain as day the 76ers don’t have a plan. The reason I’ve (and others) come to this conclusion is their best assets are big men, which isn’t a bad think, but wouldn’t you want a young guard to grow with your team so you can legitimately start a foundation for your team? They traded away Michael Carter-Williams after drafting him three years ago, I personally don’t think he was the answer, but he is better than what they have now. They also traded away Elfrid Payton last year on draft day which has shown potential in Orlando.
Nerlens Noel has shown potential in his rookie season after sitting out his draft season with an ACL injury, Joel Embiid sat out last season with a foot injury. This season these two were suppose to head the front court for Philly but with Sam Hinkie and crew bringing in Okafor does that mean they plan on trading Embiid? Or is his foot worse off than initially expected? One thing we know Mr. Okafor isn’t too happy about being in Philly see below, vines are worth a thousand words?
How ever you cut it right now the 76ers aren’t a very attractive place for free agents unless they are marginal and want to get overpaid so if they don’t get guard help soon who is going to feed the post? And can all three big men play together? I know Noel’s game fits with both bigs, but which one will be there for the long haul?
“Tank city” doesn’t seem to be leaving Philly anytime soon sorry 76ers fans, Allen Iverson is rolling over in his grave.
I think Embiid is further away than we realize. Might be more a second season? If so, then offense defense looks really good in Philly in that frontcourt….
