We are at the midway point of the 2015-16 NBA season. Now that All Star weekend is in the books it’s time for the pretenders and contenders to show their true colors the rest of the way. Those elite teams will continue to separate themselves from the bunch while those who are struggling with injuries or are in rebuild mode will look even worse than they did in previous months. Rightfully so, the defending champion Golden State Warriors are the talk of the town. They are on pace to break the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls record of 72 wins and 10 losses the best mark in the history of the league also winning a championship that season. Are they alone in their quest though?
Only two teams in the NBA currently have single digit losses. One of the teams has familiar faces if you’ve been a fan of the league since the late 90’s. The San Antonio Spurs sitting currently 2nd in the Western Conference at 45-8 are on pace to have their best season in franchise history. Even with their storied history especially since 97 and up, no other Spurs team has had a better winning percentage (.849) going into the All Star break. We literally haven’t seen a better Spurs team? With Duncan, Parker and Ginobili still providing meaningful minutes and Coach Pop still running the show San Antonio seems like the favorite to stop Golden States’ fairy tale season. Kawhi Leonard has emerged as an All Star/ potential superstar and newcomers Lamarcus Alridge and David West have bought right in to that old school Spurs culture. While you watch the Warriors potentially (probably) break the all time regular season record don’t be surprised if the team who ended the Heatles streak of rings also sends Steph Curry fishing way before planned.
