University of Cincinnati football head coach Luke Fickell was named one of 18 semifinalists for the George Munger College Coach of the Year Award, Maxwell Football Club President, Mark Dianno, announced Wednesday.
Joining Fickell on the list are Dino Babers (Syracuse), Bill Clark (UAB), Butch Davis (Florida International), Jim Harbaugh (Michigan), Josh Heupel (UCF), Brian Kelly (Notre Dame), Mike Leach (Washington State), Lance Leipold (Buffalo), Jeff Monken (Army West Point), Ed Orgeron (LSU), Lincoln Riley (Oklahoma), Nick Saban (Alabama), Kirby Smart (Georgia), Mark Stoops (Kentucky), Dabo Swinney (Clemson), Matt Wells (Utah State) and Kyle Whittingham (Utah).
The Bearcats second-year head coach has led the team to a 9-2 mark (5-2 American Athletic Conference). Fickell was tabbed for the watch lists for the Dodd Trophy and Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach the Year awards. The nine wins is the most for UC since 2014. Over the course of the season, the Bearcats have been ranked in both national polls and earned the first College Football Playoff ranking in program history on Nov. 13, 2018.
UC will be on the hunt for its seventh 10-win season in program history on Friday, Nov. 23, closing out the 2018 regular season against ECU at 3:30 p.m. ET on senior day inside Nippert Stadium. The game will be televised on CBS SN with radio coverage on 700 WLW AM.
Semifinalist voting for the Maxwell Football Club Collegiate Coach of the Year award will begin on Monday Nov. 26th and close on Monday, Dec. 10th. The finalist round will include the top three coaches as selected in the semifinalist round. Finalist voting will open Dec. 11th and run until Dec. 27th. The winner will be announced Dec. 28th.
The formal presentation of the George Munger Collegiate Coach of the Year Award will take place at the Maxwell Football Club’s National Awards Gala on Friday, March 8, 2019 at the Tropicana Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Eligible voters include Maxwell Football Club members, NCAA Head Football Coaches, Sports Information Directors and selected national media. Kirby Smart of the University of Georgia was the 2017 winner of the award.
