University of Cincinnati junior guard Jarron Cumberland (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington High School) has been named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
Cumberland averaged a team-high 18.5 points, made eight three-pointers, shot 61.5 percent (8 of 13) from three-point range and 52.0 percent (13 of 25) from the field with 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals in helping lead Cincinnati to a 2-0 week.
Cumberland registered his fifth 20-point game of 2018-19, pouring in a game-high 25 points in Cincinnati’s 93-64 victory over UCLA on Wednesday, Dec. 19. The junior guard shot 9 of 17 from the field against the Bruins with four three-pointers, five rebounds and two steals. He tallied 12 points with four three-pointers against South Carolina State on Saturday, Dec. 22.
Cumberland is averaging a team-high 16.2 points while shooting 47.1 percent (32 of 68) from three-point range with 2.9 assists and 1.5 steals this season.
The first-team all-conference preseason selection entered the Holiday break ranked among American Athletic Conference leaders in three-point percentage (first at .471), three-pointers made (fifth at 2.5), points (eighth at 16.2), free throw percentage (eighth at .796), steals (12th at 1.5) and minutes played (25th at 27.9).
Earlier this season, Cumberland was named the league’s player of the week when he averaged a team-high 21.0 points, hit seven three-pointers and made 20 of 23 free throws, helping lead Cincinnati to three wins and the Emerald Coast Classic championship.
Cumberland was named the tournament’s most valuable player after he scored a game-high 25 points thanks in part to a career-high 13 of 14 free throws, in Cincinnati’s 71-57 win over Ole Miss in the championship game on Saturday, Nov. 24 in Niceville, Fla. He tallied 11 points, six rebounds, three steals and a pair of blocks against George Mason on Friday, Nov. 23.
Earlier in the week in Cincinnati, Cumberland matched his career high with 27 points on 11 of 19 shooting, four three-pointers and six assists against Western Michigan (Nov. 19).
Cumberland was named to The American’s All-Rookie Team and was the AAC’s Co-Sixth Man of the Year in 2016-17.
