University of Cincinnati junior forward Jarron Cumberland has been named to the Lute Olson Award Mid-Season Watch List.
The award is presented annually to the nation’s top Division I player in college basketball. Incoming freshman and transfers are not eligible for the preseason watch list.
Cumberland is averaging 16.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.3 steals for the Bearcats (12-3 overall, 1-1 American Athletic Conference) entering Thursday’s game at Tulsa.
Cumberland entered the week ranked among the league leaders in three-point percentage (first at .468), three-pointers made (6th at 2.5), points (sixth at 16.7), free throw percentage (eighth at .800), steals (tied for 13th at 1.3) and assist-to-turnover ratio (14th at 1.3).
The Wilmington, Ohio, native has posted 20 or more points in six games this season and reached double figures in scoring in 14 of 15 contests. He matched his career high with 27 points against Western Michigan (Nov. 19, 2018) and recorded 25 points against both Ole Miss (Nov. 24, 2018) and UCLA (Dec. 19, 2018).
A two-time AAC Player of the Week selection in 2018-19, Cumberland was named a preseason first team all-conference selection by league coaches and was tabbed to the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year preseason watch list.
The 2019 Lute Olson Award will be presented at the College Insider awards event in April at the site of the men’s Division I national championship in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
