Starting Anew: Competitive League of Legends Returns with Season 9

Finally, G2 Esports made quick use of Origen as they blanketed them in 27 minutes. They then went on to dispatch Schalke 04 with ease in their next game, ensuring them first place in the LEC standings. Any murmurs of them needing time to figure out how to play League well together went out the window. They played like they were champions. Perkz, despite handing over his mid-lane spot to Caps, has managed to hold his own on the bottom lane by posting a KDA of 15/3/15. Sure, all this only happened after the first set of fixtures, but one wouldn’t be surprised if they stayed as the number one team in Europe from here on out.

LCK

SKT’s redemption tour after a disappointing 2018 began in dominant fashion as they went undefeated in the first week of the LCK (League of Legends Champions of Korea) Spring Split. They dispatched Jin Air Green Wings and Afreeca Freecs in clean sweeps to go atop the standings with a 2-0 record. Unlike back then where Faker had to work excessively hard to carry his sub par teammates, everything went smooth sailing as he sat back on his Urgot and watched his team wreak havoc on their opponents. Who knows though. Maybe he’ll stick with Urgot for the rest of the split. If anyone can’t stop him with this game plan, then why should he change it?

In other news, Gen.G continued their poor form as they lost their opening matches to both newly promoted teams DAMWON and SANDBOX Gaming (formerly Team BattleComics) in straight sets. Their situation now is what doomed SKT last year as Ruler stood out as essentially being the player carrying the entire team on his back with his AD Carry role. For a team with aspirations to win Worlds, this is not the way to go if they want to at least compete there, and that comes under the assumption that they’ll qualify in the first place. Instead of focusing on the big picture, they should instead look at what they need to fix for their next game in the LCK.

Griffin, a team promoted from the CK (Challengers Korea/2nd tier) a year ago, won their first 2 contests to share first place with SKT. They defeated Kingzone DragonX, the Spring Split winner of last year, and Jin Air Green Wings to reach this point. This comes after a successful KeSPA Cup run which amounted a prize money of 40 million ‎₩. While the majority of the Korean scene looked to the market to change their rosters, Griffin instead decided to stand firm and stick with their core as they believed they can succeed without adding plenty of free agents. Well, when a team finished with a 13-5 record from last year’s Summer Split, I’m sure I wouldn’t have wanted to change anything also. But the season is still young, so they must keep up their exceptional start if they want to continue proving their doubters wrong over their silent offseason.
