Since the passing of Pernell Whitaker on Monday I decided to rewatch one of the biggest robbery decisions I’ve ever witnessed. This took place in September of 1993, I was a whopping 10 years of age and I remember my dad and granddad (R.I.P.) being pissed about the draw. To build the scene this was a match between the No. 1 and No. 2 pound for pound boxers. Whitaker was a slick defensive fighter who threw nice counters and combinations from many angles and Chavez was an in your face brawler with knockout power.
My takeaways from the fight:
- Chavez barely hit Whitaker.
- Whitaker countered and threw nice combos all night.
- Those judges should’ve been fired.
- How in the
hellwas 87-0 coming into that fight? Was he fighting weekly?
- The Alamodome was jumping until Whitaker started washing Chavez after Round one.
- Floyd Mayweather needs to thank Whitaker for showing him the successful style that he implemented later in his career. (I know it wasn’t the shoulder roll, but yeah you know what I’m saying)
Check out the fight and let me know your thoughts!
R.I.P to Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker one of the best to ever do it!
