Scott earns three more awards from AAC

Not only did Senior Tre Scott make First Team All-AAC, he grabbed Defensive Player of the Year, Most Improved Player and Sportsmanship Award. The young man grabbed three awards today.

Congrats to Tre!

Per GoBearcats:

University of Cincinnati redshirt-senior forward Trevon Scott was named the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year and received the Most Improved Player Award and the Sportsmanship Award the league announced Wednesday.

Scott, along with teammate senior guard Jarron Cumberland, were named All-AAC First Team on Tuesday.

Scott’s four end-of-the-regular-season honors from the league are the most since Gary Clark was named the AAC’s Player of the Year, All-AAC First Team, Defensive Player of the Year and winner of the Sportsmanship Award in 2018.

Scott is the third Bearcat to be recognized as the AAC Defensive Player of the Year (joining Clark [2018] and Justin Jackson [2014]) and the fourth UC player to earn the AAC’s Sportsmanship Award (along with Clark [2018], Troy Caupain [2017] and Sean Kilpatrick [2014]).

Scott has enjoyed his best season as a Bearcat in 2019-20, averaging 11.4 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.5 steals. He has gathered 13 double-doubles on the year, including 11 during league play.

The native of Townsend, Ga., is attempting to become the first UC player to average a double-double since Dwight Jones averaged 16.6 points and 10.1 rebounds in 1982-83. Scott’s 10.5 rebounds are the most at UC since Pat Cummings averaged 11.3 rebounds during the 1978-79 campaign.

In league action, the redshirt-senior forward finished among the AAC’s leaders in rebounds (first at 11.6), defensive rebounds (first at 8.9) field goal percentage (third at .511), minutes played (third at 35.6), steals (tied for fourth at 1.8), offensive rebounds (tied for fifth at 2.7) and blocks (ninth at 0.9).

Scott entered this week ranked among the nation’s best in defensive rebounds (seventh at 7.77), rebounds per game (16th at 10.5), total rebounds (21st at 316) and double-doubles (32nd with 13) for the season.

// HELPING LEAD CINCINNATI TO A SHARE OF AAC TITLE

Scott helped guide the Bearcats to a share of the 2020 AAC regular-season crown, posting four 20-point efforts over the last eight games of the regular season while averaging 17.1 points and 13.8 rebounds and shooting 51.0 percent (53 of 104) from the floor during the stretch.

His 22 points and 21 rebounds against UCF (2/19) marked the first 20 point-20 rebound performance by a Bearcat since Kenyon Martin tallied 24 points and 23 rebounds in a 75-38 home win over DePaul on Feb. 21, 1998.

He tallied a season-high 25 points in back-to-back overtimes games at UConn (Feb. 19) and against Memphis (Feb. 13).

A menace on the boards, Scott pulled down 10 or more rebounds in each of UC’s last 10 games of the regular season, including a career-high 21 against UCF (Feb. 19).

In all, Scott has played in 108 wins at Cincinnati, second only to Steve Logan (111 from 1999-2002) for most in school history. Entering the week, he was tied with Michigan’s Jon Teske (108) for having played in the second most wins in the nation over the past four years. Only Virginia’s Mamadi Diakite (110) had played in more.

// TAKING HIS GAME TO A NEW LEVEL

Scott’s production jumped during his junior season last year but grew to a new level in 2019-20. He is averaging more points (11.4 to 9.3) and rebounds (10.5 to 6.9), while shooting better from the field (.493 to .472) in 2019-20.

Scott owns 19 games with 10 more rebounds in 2019-20, compared to seven a season ago and has the lead the Bearcats in rebounds 22 times this season compared to 18 in 2018-19.

He also has had more games with three or more assists (12) and three or more steals (eight) in 2019-20 than any other season at UC.

// A GREAT AMBASSADOR FOR CINCINNATI

Off the court, Scott has proven himself as a tremendous leader and ambassador for the UC men’s basketball team.

Scott was one of 30 candidates nationally, and the only player from the AAC, named for the prestigious 2020 Senior CLASS Award, given annually to a men’s basketball player who excels both on and off the court and has notable achievements in the areas of community, classroom, character and competition.

Scott is on schedule to earn a master’s degree in sports administration in April 2020 after receiving an undergraduate degree in interdisciplinary studies in December 2018. An excellent student, Scott has been selected to the Dean’s List (3.4 grade-point average) and Bearcats Honor Roll (3.0 GPA or better) three times and was inducted into the UC Legend of Excellence for achieving the highest cumulative GPA on the team for 2018-19.

A two-year captain on the men’s basketball team, Scott continuously pushes his teammates to strive for excellence. UC men’s basketball head coach John Brannen identified Scott as a strong leader and encouraged him to attend the Athletes in Action Captains Academy, a summer leadership conference for student-athletes in 2019.

A positive example and strong representative of his team, university and the city of Cincinnati, Scott has made an impact in the Queen City as well. He organized and facilitated sports drills for 50 inner city children at the Cincinnati Boys and Girls Club and played games and inspired youth at Rockdale Elementary School last season. He also has helped the UC men’s basketball team volunteer in the local community at places such as Our Daily Bread and the Friar’s Club, spending time with children, being a positive role model and stressing the importance of staying in school.
