#2 – 1991-92 – 29-5 Overall (8-2 GMWC)
Although this team has a lower win total than all three before them, an argument could actually be made for this group to also be listed at No. 1. I thought about it, but felt like having them comfortably at No. 2 was the best spot. This was the UC team that put Bob Huggins on the national map. He had two good, winning record seasons prior to this at UC, but this team would push it over the top. Anytime Nick Van Exel and Corie Blount are your 3rd and 4th leading scorers you’ve got yourself a hell of a squad. They get the most name recognition thanks to future NBA careers, but lets not forget Anthony Buford (maybe the best UC transfer of all time) coming in for his senior season and lighting it up for 15.3 points a game, and Herb Jones leading everyone with 18.1 a game. Future voice of the Bearcats Terry Nelson was also on this team. They would average the most points of any UC team on this list with 79 a game, while giving up only 63. That would help lead them to the Great Midwest Conference regular season title, and they would then win the GMWC conference tourney on top of it. They would be ranked as high as 12 in the AP Poll and would receive a No. 4 seed in the NCAA tourney. What happened next is what gets this team all the way up to No. 2 on the list. Comfortable wins against Delaware and Michigan State would get them to the Sweet 16 where they would barely survive against UTEP, 69-67. This set up an Elite 8 game against Penny Hardaway and the Memphis (State) Tigers, for the fourth time of the year, and while the three prior contests had been semi close, this would not be as UC blew them out by 31 capping off a perfect 4-0 season against Penny and Memphis, a little piece of trivia that will always remain funny. With the victory Huggins got UC back into the Final 4 for the first time in decades, a truly historic team. The only downside is this historic team ran head on into another historic team, the “Fab-5” Michigan Wolverines. UC would end up falling to the Fab-5, 76-72.
