TFON speaks with Northmont (OH) WR Javien Brownlee about his UC offer

NM – First question I have for you, are you just being recruited as a wide receiver or are there other positions you are can play as well?

JB- Yes, I am being recruited as a receiver, but I can also play some defensive back as well.

NM- What coaches have you been in contact with from the University of Cincinnati?

JB- I have not been able to be in contact with any of the coaches because of NCAA regulations. Coach Mike Brown and a few other recruting directors follow me on social media and have sent me stuff about camp and an unofficial visit once things opened back up. But today, was the first time speaking with them face to face.

NM- Coach Brown is an amazing person and coach. Was today your first time ever on campus? What stood out to you the most about camp?

JB- Yes, today was my first time actually on campus. Some things that stood out to me was the energy and the overall environment, another thing that stood out to me was how coach Brown worked with me one on one.

NM- It was a great day to be on campus. Have you been offered by Cincinnati yet by a chance?

JB- Yes, I received an offer today after camp.

NM- Awesome, congratulations on the offer. I see you attend Northmont High School, I actually did a piece with Markus Allen before he announced his decision. What was it like sharing the field with someone of his talent and what have you been able to learn from a player like him over the past two seasons?

JB- It was a blessing being able to have the chance to share the field with him. He is like a big brother to me. I learned a lot of stuff from working with him like being able to read the defender, what releases to do and just overall perfecting my routes.

NM- That’s the best feeling man is to share the field with someone like family. He’s going to do big things at Wisconsin. How did you feel after receiving your offer from Cincinnati, coming off the season they just had? Anything in particular?

JB- Just to see how the program is evolving into a contender with all the other “Power 5” schools, I’m just extremely blessed and honored that they are my first Division 1 offer.

NM- Perfect answer, Now let’s talk about your game a little. What’s some of your goals ahead of your upcoming junior season? What are you planning to focus on the most to take your game to the next level?

JB- Statistically my goal is to improve all my stats, but my overall goal is to become a leader, to perfect my craft and to compete at a high level.

NM- I love how you used the term leader. That’s a big trait. How would you describe your game personally for the people who haven’t heard your name before? What kind of players are coaches expecting to get out of you?

JB- I would describe my game like an all around versatile athlete anywhere you put me on the field I will contribute and make plays. I can play inside or outside as a receiver. I have speed, I’m very shifty so I have the ability to break tackles. These next two seasons of high school will be a showcase of it all. The players coaches are expecting to get out of me is someone who is hard working, competitive, a team player and someone who will give their all for not only myself, but for my team.

NM- Awesome an overall athletic playmaker. Where do you feel like you excel the most at on the field, whether it’s creating seperation, using that speed, your footwork etc. Where do you feel like you overall excel the most?

JB- I think it’s my ability to run routes and being able to create separation.

NM- Being a wide receiver and defensive back what are some of your favorite routes to run and or defend?

JB- As a wide receiver I don’t really have a favorite route I like to run. I can run any route on the route tree, it’s more on reading the defender or coverage of the defense when I am on the line.

NM- Awesome, now a little more about you. Tell us about your journey to football. What/who inspired you to play the sport of football?

JB- All of my family is into football, but what really inspired me is going to my brothers games and watching him play, but as I got older I wanted to make a name for myself and I made it a goal of mine to make it to the league one day and take care of my mom and family.

NM- That’s what its all about man, family over everything. Who are some guys you try to model your game after, whether it’s current or former players?

JB- Right now my favorite receiver is Stefon Diggs, but I try to take different things from different receivers and try to emulate them into my game.

NM- Awesome, my last question for you, now that you have been offered do you plan to come back to campus before the season starts up?

JB- Of course, but hopefully next time I come up is for a game and I get to meet coach Fickell.
