The Bearcats volleyball team got some big news yesterday as freshman Abby Walker was named AAC Offensive Player of the Week with her performances over the weekend to help lead the Bearcats to victories over Memphis and SMU.
Abby Walker, a freshman middle blocker recorded 25 kills, nine service aces, tallying for a total of 40 points over the two match span, over the weekend. The Cambridge, Ohio native is continuing her great start to her young Bearcat career is second in the team in points, only behind senior outside Maria Mallon. Walker started her strong weekend with dominant performance versus Memphis on Friday where she recorded 15 kills, five service aces, as well as seven blocks. Walker set herself up for a strong contention for AAC Player of the week right away with that performance but she followed it right back up on Sunday when the Bearcats took on SMU. Walker recorded 10 kills, four service aces and two blocks versus the Mustangs to help the Bearcats hand SMU their first loss in the American Athletic Conference. Walker recorded her four service aces at one of the most crucial times of the match on Sunday, the Bearcats were in the midst of a 6-0 run late in Set 2 after the Mustangs jumped out to a 15-10 lead, Where walker decided to rattle off four service aces during that 6 point swing to help flip the momentum to the Bearcats to provide a spark late in the set to give the Bearcats a huge 2 set to 0 lead over the Mustangs.
Walker has been very impressive to start the season and has been a key piece for the Bearcats early success to start the season. Walker is second on the team in points as she has tallied 151.5 points, 30 blocks, 15 service aces, as well as 118 kills which is 3rd on the team. The freshman middle blocker has been dominant on all aspects of the game and has been a very big piece to the Bearcats success to kick off the season. Walker leads the team with her 15 service aces, has given a lot of teams troubles in serve receive with her dominant float serve.
Congratulations to Abby Walker on earning AAC Offensive Player of the Week. The Bearcats will be back in action this Wednesday at 7 pm when the team takes on East Carolina University, as they look to extend the winning streak to 3 matches.
