WBB: Bearcats fall to Tulane, 80-56

Per GoBearcats:

The University of Cincinnati women’s basketball team fell to Tulane University, 80-56, Sunday afternoon in Devlin Fieldhouse.
 
Sophomore guard Jillian Hayes led the team with 21 points, shooting 9-for-10 from the free throw line, and added five rebounds, three steals and two assists. Freshman wing Emerita Mashaire added another 19 points off a season and career-high five three-point shots.
 
The Bearcats shot 92% from the free throw line and 44% in three-point shots, however Tulane shot 50% from the field compared to UC’s 29%.
 
Cincinnati moves to 10-13 overall and 3-8 in AAC play while Tulane improves to 16-7 and 7-4 in the conference. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Tulane started the game up 4-0 before the Bearcats offense lit it up from beyond the arc. Mashaire was a perfect 3-for-3 from the three-point line and junior guard Caitlyn Wilson added another three-point basket, however Tulane held on to the four-point lead heading into the second quarter, 16-12.
 
The Bearcats tied the game up at 16 to start the second quarter off layups by Mashaire and graduate forward Arame Niang. The Green Wave would go on a 10-3 run for their largest lead of the game, 26-19, before Hayes’ four points from the charity stripe and Mashaire’s fourth three-point basket brought the score to within five, Tulane still leading, 31-26. Hayes scored a quick four points off two turnaround jumpers, one coming right as the buzzer went off, however Tulane went into halftime with a 36-30 lead.
 
The Green Wave went on a 7-0 run to start the third quarter and extended their lead to 43-30 before Hayes ended their run with two free throw shots and Mashaire added a layup in the paint. Tulane couldn’t be stopped, going on another run, outscoring UC 10-1 to extend its largest lead of the game, 53-35. Hayes’ four points and junior point guard AkriaLevy’s two free throw shots weren’t enough as Tulane finished the third quarter with a 56-41 lead.
 
Hayes’ layup started the fourth quarter, however it was all Green Wave as they outshot the Bearcats 24-15 to finish the game, 80-56. 
 
NOTEABLES

  • Jillian Hayes led the team with 21 points and 36 minutes of play.
  • Emerita Mashaire recorded a new season high in points (19) and three-point shots (5). 
  • Caitlyn Wilson and Akira Levy both had six rebounds while Levy added six assists and three steals. 

NEXT UP

The Bearcats are back on the road Wednesday, Feb 16 when they travel to Tampa to face off against South Florida.
