Per GoBearcats:
University of Cincinnati women’s basketball head coach Michelle Clark-Heard announced on Monday the addition of Myia Johnson as an assistant coach to the Bearcats’ program.
A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Johnson (formerly McCurdy) joins the Bearcats after spending three seasons at Penn State as an assistant coach, assistant recruiting coordinator and the assistant defensive coordinator.
“I am so excited to welcome Myia to our staff,” Heard said. “I have known Myia since she was in high school and I was an assistant coach here at UC. She will bring a high level of energy, competitiveness and experience from other major programs to Cincinnati. Myia is one of the top up-and-coming assistants in the country, and she is excited to come back home and start working with our student-athletes.”
During the 2019-20 season, her first season with the Lady Lions, Johnson helped coach Siyeh Frazier to 70 steals, a personal career high, third-most in the conference and a top-50 mark in the nation (43).
Prior to Penn State, Johnson spent three seasons (2016-19) as an assistant at Wisconsin, primarily working with the wing players.
She also spent three seasons as the video coordinator at Ohio State, from 2013-16. At OSU, Johnson managed film exchange and scouting duties. The Buckeyes advanced to the NCAA Tournament during two of those years, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2016.
Johnson served as an administrative assistant/video coordinator at South Florida in 2012-13. She was involved in the day-to-day operations of the women’s basketball program, working directly with head coach Jose Fernandez as his personal assistant.
Johnson graduated from Rutgers in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in sport management and a minor in sociology. She was a four-year letter winner for Basketball Hall of Fame head coach C. Vivian Stringer and the Scarlet Knights from 2006-10, appearing in two Sweet 16s, an Elite Eight and one National Championship game. She was co-captain of the 2009-10 squad, averaging 4.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game and was Rutgers’ defensive player of the year as a senior in 2010.
A 2006 graduate of Winton Woods high school in Cincinnati, Johnson served as team captain and led the Warriors to an undefeated 14-0 conference record and their second straight FAVC-Buckeye championship.
Rated by USA Today as one of the Top 25 players in the nation, she was one of only 36 girls in the U.S. to be invited in 2005 to play in the USA Basketball Youth Development Festival at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO.
She and her husband, Brook, have one son, Noah, and one daughter, Nova.
