Today, Jon Rothstein reported that Cincinnati, UCF and Houston are all playing to join the Big 12 for the 2023-24 academic year. Ross Dellenger also reported it wasn’t finalized, but it is expected to be next week. While not finalized we all knew this was the plan for the AAC teams who are planning to leave for the Big 12 as BYU has already secured its 2023-24 entry into the Big 12.
The big hiccup is what will the early exit fee be for the AAC teams as it is normally $10 million if you have the mandatory 27 months, we know UConn left early for the Big East a few years back for $17 million once we get those numbers we will have the official information. Earlier rumors out in the universe was that the AAC wanted $30 million from each program to leave early would certainly stall the exit until 2024-25, but we all know all three of these programs aren’t writing that check.
It seems Cincinnati will have a chance to play Oklahoma and Texas for two years because of how steep the Big 12 buyout fee is.
Once it has been made official TFON will report on it.
