Takeaways from the Bearcats 81-72 victory over Virginia Tech in the opening round of the NIT

Landers Nolley being effective on both sides of the floor against former team-

The Bearcats put up 52 second half point on the Hokies, which is very impressive considering they trailed 33-29 at the half. A team that saw Landers Nolley pick up his third foul with 45 seconds to go in the first half as well, which was a crucial part of this game tonight. However, Nolley was locked in tonight as he finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds, recording his 6th double-double of the season. That is when the Bearcats momentum flipped was out in the second half, as they continued to get stops on the defensive end, then turned into offense and man where they are clicking on all cylinders tonight, shooting roughly 46% from the field. A huge step in the right direction for the Bearcats after coming off a devasting loss to Houston in Fort Worth over the weekend in the AAC Semifinals.

A huge takeaway from this game was the energy of the fans. The fans were great, and man was Fifth Third Arena rocking tonight, like it has been all season long. The crazy thing is the Bearcats only sold the lower bowl due to on super short notice. “That’s the good thing about playing in Fifth Third and for Cincinnati. The crowd gives us a lift every time. I want to say thank you for supporting and coming out this year. It’s a blessing to play for Cincinnati,” said Mika Adams-Woods. “I could feel the energy tonight. I got chills,”said Miller.

Wes Miller preached for fans to show up tonight on short notice in his weekly press conference, and man did the crowd not disappoint. Despite, students being on spring break, that was one of the loudest games I have heard Fifth Third Arena this year. It might’ve only been around 7500 people for this evening’s NIT matchup, but I will say this, those fans that did come out, they brought the energy this team needed. “Man, what a crowd. We are at one of the unique places, it’s the freaking NIT, this is a program that goes to a lot of NCAA tournaments. People come out, and not just come out for the NIT, not many places do that for the NIT. They were loud, and man did they lift us tonight. I hate that we can’t get back in here, I was begging athletic director John Cunningham, can we please find a way to play here again, but I don’t think it’s possible. I really just want to thank everyone that came out and supported us this evening,” said Miller.
