University of Cincinnati women’s basketball announced on Monday the signing of sophomore transfer Aicha Dia as a part of the 2023 class.
“I am thrilled to have Aicha join our family at Cincinnati,” head coach Katrina Merriweather said. “She possesses the work ethic, mentality, personality, and skill set that makes her an ideal fit. I am confident that she will have an immediate impact on both ends of the floor and compete every single day. The sky is the limit for her, and we welcome her into our program with open arms.”
The versatile 6-1 forward will have three years of eligibility remaining after appearing in 22 games in her freshman season at Penn State. In her final contest with the Nittany Lions, Dia tied or surpassed her previous career-high in minutes, rebounds, steals and assists, totaling five rebounds, two steals and an assist in 21 minutes against No. 17 Michigan in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament.
Dia also notched a career-high six points on 3-4 from the field against Cornell on Dec. 21.
The Montreal, Quebec native was a member of the Canada U19 National Team, where she helped lead the team to a fifth-place finish at the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup.
Dia played for Dawson College in Canada for her high school career, where she served as a team captain and earned 2020 league Rookie of the Year honors. She initially chose Penn State over Rutgers, Memphis, St. Johns and East Carolina.
“I am so glad to have found a home in Cincinnati,” Dia added. “I am excited for the opportunity to compete for Coach Merriweather and her amazing staff here, and also to represent the university and this fanbase proudly.”
