This afternoon, Bearcats tight end Josh Whyle was drafted by the Tennessee Titans with the 1475) overall pick (5th round) in the 2023 NFL Draft. Whyle attended LaSalle High School here in Cincinnati before deciding to stay home and be one of the original “Hometown Heros” under coach Fickell where he quickly became a fan favorite during his five seasons in Clifton.
Whyle, is the University of Cincinnati’s all time touchdown leader at the tight end position after surpassing Brent Celek vs UCF in 2022. Whyle, had been training with two of the top ends in this draft class in Michael Mayer, and Darnell Washington out in Southern California ahead of the draft. What makes Whyle such an intriguing pick for the Titans with his tremendous size and ability to be a dynamic weapon in the passing game, with a great athleticism and hands. Whyle, is also a very dynamic pass blocker as well and loves to get physical within the box.
Whyle, a 6’6” tight end has shown his abilities as a pass catcher as well as a pass blocker over his Bearcat career, is coming off a 2022 season where he finished with a career high 32 receptions, where he hauled in three touchdowns and totaled 326 yards as a redshirt senior. However, the Cincinnati native saw his best two seasons come in 2020-2021 after recording six touchdowns in each of those two seasons for the Bearcats. Whyle was poised to be one of the top tight ends in the 2022 NFL draft before suffering an injury in the Playoffs vs Alabama that ultimately led to him returning to the Bearcats for his covid year.
Congratulations to Josh and his family as he continues this next stop of his playing career with the Titans.
