The Bearcats (2-3, 0-2 XII) welcomed in Iowa State (3-3, 2-1 XII) to Historic Nippert Stadium for their annual homecoming game as they searched for their first Big 12 victory. The Bearcats were coming off a two-week break following their 35-27 loss to BYU after the bye week, but were looking to maintain their identify despite the rough skid as of late.
The Bearcats would fall to (2-4, 0-3 XII) after falling to Iowa State 30-10 as the Cyclones would play spoil to Cincinnati’s homecoming. Matt Campbell and the Cyclones would get the programs first win over longtime friend Scott Satterfield and Cincinnati as the Bearcats are still in search for their first ever Big 12 victory.
“Tough one today, give credit to Matt Campbell, and that Iowa State team. They have gotten a lot better and grown over the season. They’re a tough team. A really tough team to go beat if you make the mistakes, we did this afternoon,” Satterfield said. “They came out and played a really good game. I thought a big turning point of the game was the deep ball on 3rd-5 to Dee Wiggins on our first drive. Wide open, we have to connect on that ball, bottom line. Then we come back throw a pick, we just can’t have that offensively. We battled back in there, but defensively we gave up 4th down, fall for the fake field goal that picks up the first down. We hold them on 3rd and long in the redzone but get a roughing the passer penalty to extend the drive. We just shot ourselves in the foot, and when you’re playing a good quality team like Iowa State, it is going to be hard to overcome that. All those things combined just didn’t give us a chance there in the second half. That is a tough team to go beat when you make the mistakes we made today.”
Final Stats
Emory Jones really struggled this afternoon after noting earlier in the week that Iowa State plays a unique defense, one he hasn’t seen too often in a 3-3-5 scheme. However, Jones finished the day just 14-of-26, passing for just 96 yards, while throwing a touchdown and two interceptions along the way. Jones led the rushing attack for the Bearcats for the second straight week as he racked up 72 yards on 15 carries.
Chamon Metayer flashed for the second straight game as the tight end is poised to have a breakout second half of the season after recording his third touchdown in the last two games. Metayer finished with a team high 43 yards on four catches, including the Bearcats lone touchdown.
Iowa State held the Bearcats leading receiver in Xzavier Henderson to just 0 receptions on the afternoon, after entering the day 4th in the Big 12 in receptions (30). The Cyclone defense was just throwing too much pressure on the Bearcats this afternoon causing a frenzy in the secondary.
Deshawn Pace and Daniel Grzesiak anchored the defense as Pace racked up a game high 10 tackles and TFL, while Grzesiak racked up seven tackles, two sacks and two TFL’s on the day.
