This afternoon former Virginia Tech defensive back Darrick Canteen became the 8th player to announce his pledge to Scott Satterfield and the Bearcats over the last 48 hours. Canteen announced he was entering the transfer portal back on December 5th but elected to stay with the Hokies throughout the Bowl season, where the Hokies went on to defeat AAC foe Tulane 41-20 in the Military Bowl.
The 5’11” cornerback finished with 43 tackles, five passes defended, a sack and a forced fumble in his lone season as a Hokie. However, Canteen spent his first three seasons at Georgia Southern University where he racked up a total of 117 tackles, 20 passes defended and seven interceptions in his three seasons with the Eagles.
Canteen brings great veteran presence to the Bearcats secondary, but also someone who has a knack for finding the ball, which he showcased in 2020 during his freshman season where he hauled in six interceptions. Canteen also recorded a career high 64 tackles during the 2022 campaign before transferring to Virgina Tech following the season.
The Bearcats made it a priority to rebuild their secondary this offseason via transfer portal as Canteen now marks the fifth defensive back to commit to the Bearcats in recent weeks. Canteen now joins, Ormanie Arnold, Kye Stokes, Logan Wilson, Mehki Miller as newest members of Kerry Coombs secondary unit.
Canteen will have up to two years of eligibility remaining for the Bearcats as well and can be a key piece for the Bearcats secondary over the next two seasons.
