The opening week of the College Football season is always high anticipated for football fans around the world. Here are a few good, bad, and ugly moments that were worth mentioning. Sorry if I left out any key moments.
The Good
Alabama– The Crimson Tide picked up where they left off, and looked like they are already in mid-season form. Saban & Co. treated the Michigan Wolverines as if they were practice dummies. Beating the Wolverines 41-14 says a lot for a team that lost several players to the NFL and to graduation. Will this be a repeat year for the Tide? I wouldn’t bet against them.
Pac 12 Powerhouses Oregon & USC– I know Oregon and USC did not open up the season against quality teams, but these are two teams that can compete for the top spots next to Alabama and LSU. As usual both teams provided a scoring punch by both scoring 49 points and 57 points respectively. Matt Barkley did his usual, and Oregon’s Marcus Mariota silenced doubters with his stellar play as well. Oh yeah I forgot to mention Oregon’s jerseys were cold as ice as well.
Geno Smith & Le’Veon Bell’s Heisman Candidacy– Prior to the season there was not a clear cut Heisman favorite outside of Matt Barkley. With the performances that Geno Smith and Le’Veon Bell put on display this past week it will be interesting to see how things shake up with the Heisman race for the remainder of the season. Bell had 265 total yards to go along with two touchdowns, and Smith had an easy day at the office with 323 yards in the air as well as 65 yards on the ground to go along with 5 total touchdowns. I know that these two players will not have these type of number’s every weekend, but will they be able to continue to play at such a high level? We shall see!
Oklahoma State– The Oklahoma State Cowboys put up numbers similar to the Oklahoma City Thunder in their contest against Savannah State. After winning 84-0 how could you not give OK State some love lol.
The Bad
Life without the Honey Badger- I know LSU routed North Texas 41-14, but it was odd not to see No. 7 making plays all over the field. LSU will have a great year, because they have other great players and great coaching, but the excitement of seeing the “Honey Badger” on the field will be missed by College Football fans.
Denard Robinson– The opening part of the season Denard Robinson is usually in the top five in the Heisman rankings. The September Heisman Trophy winner has easily been the most impressive player during the month of September during the past three seasons. After playing against the Crimson Tide, Robinson looked flustered, and could not get into a rhythm running or passing the ball. I can’t hate, because 90% of all College Football quarterbacks would like a deer in headlights as well when playing against Saban’s boys.
Penn State– Things are not so rosy in Happy Valley. Many people predicted the game against the Ohio Bobcats would be tough due to the Bobcats returning so many players from their stellar 10-4 season last year, but it was the unthinkable to see a MAC team to come into this type of environment and defeat the Nittany Lions in any type of fashion. Well, Coach O’Brien it looks like you have your hands full. Good Luck!
The Ugly
Andre Parker of Kent State head the opposite way on a fumble recovery– Picking up a fumble and taking it in for a touchdown is a very exciting moment for a football player. It would have been an excellent play if Mr. Parker was headed in the right direction. Its okay at man at least you didn’t give the opposing team two points. Next time make sure your GPS is on to lead you in the right direction.
Savannah State– The Athletic Director of Savannah State is on his Kardashian grind. He exploited his team to get a payday for $860,000 by playing the Oklahoma State Cowboys and losing 84-0. That is a huge payment for the athletic department and it will benefit all of their other sports in their program. I guess there is nothing wrong with taking one for the team.
D.J. Brown’s Ankles– D.J. Brown’s ankles were last seen on the 43 yard line in Ohio Stadium due to the stutter-step/hesitation move put on him by Ohio State Quarterback Braxton Miller. I apologize to D.J. for putting him on the list there will be better day’s young man.
