Amidst all of the Sterling talk, The Seattle Seahawks locked up the best safety in football for five more years. Safety Earl Thomas is now being compensated as the best at his position, which is pretty damn accurate.
Thomas received a four year extension worth a total of $40 million with $27.75 guaranteed. Thomas has one year remaining on his rookie contract at $4.625 million which he will receive in 2014. During his four year career Thomas has made the Pro Bowl three times. He’s been giving opposing offenses the blues during his tenure and has taken the reins of best complete safety over from future Hall of Famer Ed Reed.
Now that the Seahawks have locked up Thomas they can concentrate on Pro Bowl cornerback Richard Sherman who is also on the last year of his rookie contract. Sherman won’t get compensated as swell this year on his contract being that he was picked in the 5th round while Thomas was selected in the 1st round. Sherman will be seeking over $12 million per year, which is what Darrelle Revis is making currently for the Patriots. If I was a betting man Sherman will get a deal around $45-$50 million for four years with around $25-$30 million guaranteed. That’s a lot to lock into a defensive backfield, but they have proven to be worth it.
Will Sherman’s deal get done before the season? How much do you think he will command? After Sherman’s deal is done next off season they can concentrate on Russell Wilson who isn’t eligible for a new deal until the end of the 2014 season.
